Health care coverage, or health insurance, helps pay your medical bills when you seek medical care. The right health care coverage for you and your family can make a huge difference. Everyone will need medical care at some point. Health care coverage can protect you from unexpected expenses. You can visit the doctor when you need to. In short, it can improve your life and your family’s life.

Benefits of Health Insurance

No one plans to get sick or hurt, but most people need medical care at some point. Health insurance covers these costs and offers many other important benefits.

Types of coverage available

Most Oregonians can enroll in either private health insurance through HealthCare.gov or free or low-cost coverage through the Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid). All Oregonians can apply for coverage, and no one can be denied coverage because of a pre-existing health condition.

Oregon Health Plan

Free or low-cost coverage is available to people who meet requirements for income, household size, and other factors. Adults and children who qualify will be enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan, Oregon’s Medicaid program. Coverage through the Oregon Health Plan includes doctor visits, hospital care, mental health services, and more.

Private health insurance

Many of the top insurance companies in Oregon offer health insurance plans through HealthCare.gov, where you can browse, compare, and purchase a plan. All plans available include comprehensive health benefits and have been certified by the Oregon Insurance Division. Many people who qualify for private health insurance will also qualify for a tax credit to help pay for coverage. Learn more about financial assistance.

Medicare

Medicare is the health insurance program for people age 65 or older. Certain people younger than age 65 can qualify for Medicare, too, including those who have disabilities and those who have permanent kidney failure. The program helps with the cost of health care, but it does not cover all medical expenses or the cost of most long-term care. You have choices for how you get Medicare coverage

HealthCare Life Changes

We know that life events happen and with these events come changes, sometimes unexpected. Our agents at Abel Insurance Agency can assist you in how these changes can impact your health insurance. Please remember to contact AIA if you move, have a job change or need to update your contact information such as phone number or email address. Read more about Qualifying Events.

If you’re eligible for the Oregon Health Plan or Healthy Kids, you won’t need a qualifying event to enroll as you will be able to enroll anytime throughout the year.

Those who are eligible for the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) can enroll year round, though they may be subject to the federal tax penalty for not having health insurance if they did not apply by April 30.

Healthcare Tax Credit

While IRS Form 8962 outlines repayment limits for excess Advance Payment of the Premium Tax Credit, please remember that if your income exceeds 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) there is no repayment cap. Please keep the following amounts for reference in 2015 and notify your agent immediately if you are receiving tax credits and you think you may exceed these amounts:

Household Size for Tax Purposes Income Max for Tax Credits
1 $46,680
2 $62,920
