What To Do If You Lose Your Wallet

BE PREPARED

Make yourself a list of the credit cards you own with your card number AND the 800 number to call if it is lost or stolen.

ACT FAST

1. Cancel your credit cards immediately.

2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen. This proves to credit providers that you were diligent and obviously is the first step in the investigation assuming there is one.

3. Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately placing a fraud alert on your name and SSN. This is probably one of the most overlooked steps and can be the most important one to do. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize any new credit.

Here are the phone numbers:

Equifax: 800-525-6285

Experian (formerly TRW): 888-397-3742

Trans Union: 800-680-7289

Social Security Administration Fraud Line: 800-269-0271
